This weekend saw the opening rounds of both the FIA World and European Rallycross Championships. The 2018 series kicked off at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which offered a mix of track conditions following the temperamental weather throughout the 2 day event.
FIA European Rallycross Championship: Round 1
For the second consecutive season, drivers Thomas Bryntesson and Ola Froshaug race a pair of mountune-powered 600 horsepower, four-wheel drive Ford Fiestas, that have been re-developed over the winter months.
The team had a far from perfect weekend at Round 1 with Bryntesson suffering major problems in Q3 & Q4, whilst Froshaug performed well in those two races, but unfortunately finished P4 in the Semi Final, just missing out on a Final spot.
Double FIA Euro Rallycross Champion, Derek Tohill saw good results in his four qualifying rounds in his mountune-powered Fiesta Supercar, getting him into the Semi-Finals. Unfortunately a clutch issue meant that the glory was short-lived, and the Irishman lost his place in the final race of the day.
FIA World Rallycross Championship: Round 1
The 2018 World championship debut round saw the Olsberg MSE boys, Kevin Eriksson and Robin Larsson debut the new livery on their mountune-powered Ford Fiesta, in which they took a trio of wins.
The striking ST Supercars proved their pace at the series opener, posting some good lap times in free practice. 2014 FIA European Rallycross Champion, Larsson took the cars first win in Q2, and good results in Q3 and Q4 saw him make his way to the Semi-Final, crossing the line in P6.
Teammate Eriksson had a tougher weekend, although led in Q2 for some time before the treacherous track influenced his P16 finish. The 21yr old Swede continued his fight in the following races, but unfortunately, missed out on a pass to the Semi-Finals.
Despite the challenges, the team leave Round 1 in good spirits. The new car proved its pace and performance, and its ability to compete at the front amongst the manufacturer teams. We are looking forward to seeing them back in action in Portugal at the end of the month.
